Peruvian writer and politician Jorge Mario Pedro Vargas Llosa, 1st Marquis of Vargas Llosa (born March 28, 1936) is the winner of the 2010 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is also a journalist, essayist, and college lecturer who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature in 20Vargas Llosa is a novelist and essayist who is widely regarded as one of the most important authors in Latin America, as well as one of the most important writers of his age. He is regarded by some critics as having had a greater international influence and a wider global readership than any other writer associated with the Latin American Boom period. When the Swedish Academy announced that Vargas Llosa had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for 2010, they said that the award had been granted “for his mapping of power systems and his trenchant pictures of the individual’s resistance, rebellion, and loss.” Vargas Llosa is now a visiting Professor at Princeton University’s Lewis Center for the Arts, where he teaches literature and creative writing. Author Mario Vargas Llosa first gained widespread recognition in the 1960s with novels such as The Time of the Hero (La ciudad y los perros, literally The City and the Dogs, 1963/1966), The Green House (La casa verde, 1965/1968), and the monumental Conversation in the Cathedral (Conversación en la catedral, 1969/1975). He works prolifically in a variety of literary disciplines, including literary criticism and journalism, and has a large body of work to his credit. His books contain comedies, murder mysteries, historical novels, and political thrillers, to name a few categories. There have been many feature films based on the books, including Captain Pantoja and the Special Service (1973/1978) and Aunt Julia and the Scriptwriter (1977/1982), among others. As a native Peruvian, Vargas Llosa’s writings are heavily inspired by his view of Peruvian culture and his own personal experiences as a result of his upbringing there. He has, on the other hand, been expanding his horizons and tackling issues that have arisen in other areas of the globe in recent years. Vargas Llosa has written many articles in which he criticises nationalist movements in various areas of the globe, including Bosnia, Croatia, and Serbia, among others. Another development that has occurred throughout the course of his career is a move from a style and attitude associated with literary modernism to a postmodernism that is occasionally humorous. Vargas Llosa, like many other Latin American authors, has been politically engaged throughout his career; throughout the course of his life, he has progressively shifted from the political left to liberalism or neoliberalism. While he originally backed Fidel Castro’s Cuban revolutionary regime, Vargas Llosa eventually became disillusioned with the actions of the Cuban leader and left the country. In 1990, he campaigned for president of Peru as a member of the center-right Frente Democrático (FREDEMO) alliance, which advocated for neoliberal reforms. He was defeated by incumbent President Alberto Fujimori. The man who, in 1990, “coined the term that circled the world,” saying on Mexican television that “Mexico is the ideal dictatorship,” a remark that became an adage over the next decade, is known as “El Presidente de Mexico.”
